MT: Why you need to learn – higher education as a goal and means

MD: What does higher education give? What is the use of it? This question is more often asked by students who can see how people without education find well-paid jobs.

What does higher education give in professional sphere?

A joint study of scientists from the University of Kent and Lancaster University (UK), showed that men who receive degrees in humanities with poor grades, earn less than school leavers, according to Moreover, women-graduates earn more, regardless of the nature of their activities.

The research was conducted in the light of a possible more than twofold increase in the payment for education. However, the scientists found that obtaining a degree still costs the money spent on it. The Ministry insists that higher education brings $100.000 annually.

In a professional sphere, high education gives the following:

  • A profession. The obtained knowledge on a certain specialty allows you to work in this very specialty. If the profession is in demand, then there is always the opportunity to find a job.
  • The prospect of career growth. This is not always the case, but still, having a higher education diploma, it is easier to develop your career. Many serious companies accept people with higher education for leadership positions. This is certainly not a decisive factor, but still important.
  • Opens the door for one’s own business. The presence of higher education allows you to work absolutely legally for yourself. For example, a teacher can do tutoring. All that is needed (a diploma and skills), is already there. The doctor can arrange a private reception (this, of course, is not easy, but without a doctor’s diploma it is impossible in principle). There are hundreds of such examples. Qualified work can always bring profit.

What does a higher education give you personally?

First of all, all the examinations, tests, seminars, and other task you have to complete during your studies in one way or another increase your intellectual level. A long training trains the brain.

It is much easier for a person with higher education to understand something new, to master a new specialty, or get new skills.

University is a kind of school of life. It also teaches you a lot. Nonresident students who live in a hostel learn how to plan their own expenses and arrange their own life. Numerous tests, examinations, and other control works teach a person how to find the way out of almost any difficult situation. In addition, there is some discipline, a sense of responsibility, and a desire for self-development.

Higher education expands the horizon. Education makes a person more enjoyable both for oneself and for those who surround him or her.

Higher education gives profound knowledge in any specialty. Many professions have practical application. Therefore, if you cannot find a good job, you can use this knowledge for yourself. For example, medical education allows you to orient yourself in various diseases and methods of treatment. This knowledge is always useful in life.

Higher education raises self-esteem. There is some kind of pride in yourself when you get a diploma. You did it and now you understand that you can do a lot. You have something you can be proud of. There is a sense of self-worth.

Even if education does not bring a profitable job, it will help you be more confident. A confident person can always succeed.

Therefore, do not regret the decision to graduate from the university. It only seems that time is wasted. In fact, there are a lot of advantages.

Skills you get when studying

Some other skills you get when studying at college include:

  • Ability to search and find. A significant part of modern colleges rarely gives students the full amount of information they need to learn. Most often it comes down to common methods and principles, and the search for specific information is the responsibility of students. This is considered a disadvantage. But finding information in the modern world is one of the most important and difficult to master skills.
  • Ability to study independently. It is not enough to simply find the information – it needs to be processed, understood, and transformed into the desired form.
  • Ability to control oneself. Students are considered to be careless but, in fact, the amount of work that students do is huge. In order to get a diploma, they need to learn to comply with deadlines and achieve high quality of performing various tasks.
  • Ability to work in a team. When studying a person is forced to cooperate with others. It is here that we have to share a lot of current tasks in order to at least somehow hand over everything.
